Framing is the way information is presented before anyone interprets it. The numbers may be accurate, but the chosen baseline, wording, time window, chart scale, and can steer the conclusion. A small change can look dramatic on a truncated axis. A meaningful change can look invisible on a huge scale. The lesson is that truth in the data does not guarantee fairness in the presentation.

Baselines carry arguments

A baseline is the reference point used to judge change. Starting a bar chart at zero usually shows absolute size honestly, while starting near the data can exaggerate small differences. For line charts, truncation can sometimes be acceptable if the goal is to show detail, but it must be clear and proportional. The important habit is to ask what conclusion the baseline makes easy and what conclusion it hides.

Words frame numbers too

Framing is not only visual. Saying 90 percent survival feels different from saying 10 percent mortality, even though the arithmetic is the same. Saying a policy costs billions can feel different from saying it costs a few dollars per person per month. Good statistical reading translates the claim into alternate frames. If the conclusion changes after the translation, the original frame was doing persuasive work.

The defensive move is to re-anchor the statistic. Put the axis at zero when absolute size matters. Ask for absolute counts when percentages dominate. Expand the time window when a trend starts at a convenient date. Compare with a relevant baseline, not the most flattering one. This does not every chart is dishonest. It means every chart is a choice, and choices should be inspected.
