Relative risk vs absolute risk: the difference that changes decisions

Relative risk tells you how many times bigger a risk became. Absolute risk tells you how many extra people are affected.

The short difference

is a ratio: it says one risk is 1.5 times, 2 times, or 50% higher than another. is a level or difference: it says 2 in 100 became 3 in 100, or one extra person per 100 was affected. Relative wording is compact and useful for comparison, but it hides the baseline. Absolute wording restores the denominator, which is what most decisions need.

What the Numbers Show

Worked example

If a risk rises from 2 in 100 to 3 in 100, the is 50%, because one extra case is half of the original two cases. The is 1 percentage point, or one extra case per 100 people. Both descriptions are mathematically true. They feel different because the relative version emphasizes the proportional change, while the absolute version shows the real number of additional cases.

What people get wrong

Hear “risk doubled” and the mind pictures a crowd of new cases. A risk that doubles may still be rare if it starts at 1 in 10,000. The opposite can happen too: a modest relative change can be important when the baseline is common. You cannot judge the size of a risk change from the relative phrase alone. You need the before-and-after absolute risks on the same denominator.
